Tater Tots, we’ve had a big week. Last friday, Tate McRae dropped her highly anticipated album So Close to What (which, yk, ended up #1 on the Billboard chart). Then she gave us two damn good performances on Saturday Night Live. And now, like superwoman, she just walked the Vanity Fair Oscars Party red carpet looking so absurdly gorgeous. You would’ve had no idea she’d just flown across the country yesterday. NBD! But as they say, it takes a village, and Tate’s glam is all courtesy of impeccable skincare, hair products, hair tools, and makeup.
But...in a shocking twist, it’s mostly all drugstore products. Her go-to hair and skincare can all be found at your local CVS—we love a woman for the people!! I’m specifically floored by the iconic hack her makeup artist used to get her glowy skin on the carpet using only one product under $10. Unreal. Keep reading for all the details.
Tate’s glow is all courtesy of skincare, which is hella cool. Even better: You can find it all at your local drugstore or order on Amazon. Slay.
It’s no surprise she’s covered in Neutrogena—she was just named an ambassador for the brand (did you catch those commercials with Doctorly running during the Oscars?!). Beforehand, though, her makeup artist Lilly Keys cleansed Tate’s skin with the OG Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes, then made sure every last drop of SNL makeup from the night before was off her skin with Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser. Ofc, she also layered on alllll the moisture to give Tate a super-hydrated canvas before makeup. She started with the Hydro Boost Ultra-Hydrating Serum (it’s loaded with hyaluronic acid to make your skin look super plump), then followed with the lightweight, ultra-moisturizing Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. It’s not too heavy or pore-clogging under makeup but really packs on the hydration.
But the big secret of the night is the glow all over her body, including her legs which were ~exposed~ in a liquid silver gown with a slit. She actually used sunscreen, specifically the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Spray SPF 70 to make her skin look radiant and luminous on the carpet. We all have zero excuse not to be slathering ourselves in sun protection now, k? Do as Tate does!
But while we’re here, we might as well talk about her hair, because it was also a moment. “Tate’s hair needed to be fresh, bouncy, and effortlessly beautiful,” says her hairstylist Chad Wood. He wanted to give the essence of that old-Hollywood brushed-out wave that we saw all over the Oscars red carpet but zhuzhed up a bit to maintain the youthful, fresh feel of Tate (and the Vanity Fair party she was heading to).
When her hair was damp, Wood prepped her hair with TRESemmé All-in-One Primer for heat protection, detangling, and softness. But to really get her hair sleek, he used TRESemmé Smoothing Cream from mid-lengths to ends, brushed it through, then blow-dried to get some volume. The trick to these waves, though, is a 2-inch curling iron, he says, to make these cascading bends. He set each curl with TRESemmé Workable Hairspray for hold without adding crunch.
To add a little more hold, he spritzed TRESemmé Dry Texturizing Spray all over her mid-lengths and roots, then brushed it through. This is what creates that fluffy, ultra-soft effect. FWIW, all of these TRESemmé products are from the brand’s new A-List collection, and our editors have been seriously fawning over them. They work as well as so many of our high-end formulas at a drugstore price. And they also look hella fancy, too. Makes sense why they’re fit for our queen, Tate...
